what i think about while folding laundry

There is a guy in my class who thinks that fat people shouldn't be doctors. He thinks they might influence their patients toward these bad ways or teach them that being fat is acceptable. Actually, he feels even more strongly that fat people don't deserve to get married or have kids. He thinks that their obesity is a disease or a sign of their weakness or a punishment from God (he seems to say different things to different people). He even believes that fat people threaten the American family and the American way of life because they represent hedonism and slovenliness. He's trying to pass laws in school that wouldn't let anyone considered 'overweight' or 'obese' to sit in classroom chairs, use public toilets, or ride the elevators because they "weren't built with fat people in mind". He says he loves fat people like he loves all of God's children, but when we acuse him of discriminating, he says that he doesn't have to "apoplogize for" his religion.

OK all you slow peeps out there: no there isn't a crazy guy like this at my school. Actually there are a bunch of them. Except that they feel this way about -insert another three letter word here- people. (They could never be against fat people because there's way too many fat people in this country, especially along the Bible/Burger Belt. And though laziness, hedonism, etc are all sins found in the Bible, the actual word 'fat' isn't. Oh wait, the acutal word 'gay' isn't either. Just something about men laying next to men - which if interpreted literally, could send every football tackle pile to hell.)

And I don't mean to call them crazy, because they are mostly nice people. Except when they vote. Then they tend to be mean...or irresponsible? ...or brainwashed? .... or simply incapable of applying the Golden Rule???

The funny thing is, obesity, not your sexual orientation, is actually correlated with a poor health outcome. Its almost as bad as smoking. (I'm not trying to insult any overweight people here, as much as I'm not trying to insult any smokers. It's common knowledge that both are bad for you; as is random blogging instead of going to sleep when you are sick. We all have our bad habits.) But obesity in some people can be completely out of their control -like it is in most gay people I've ever met. (No, surprisingly, they did not jump at the chance to become societal pariahs who could be denied equal rights by some stranger who "refuses to apologize" for using his religion to control other people's lives.)

Wow, that's what was going through my head while trying to fold laundry at 2am, and this is why blogs are good. Now I can sleep.

(ps: to all my gay and gayish friends, do not be insulted by me comparing you to fat people. fat people have feelings, too. they are usually unprentious and very nice...and soft and squishy. ...oh god, i'm just making enemies right and left. why can't i just be grateful for my love of penises and let the gay folk deal with their own problems?)

Every time I read your blog, I say a silent thank you to MJ for telling me about you.

As always, you make a compelling argument for accepting people as they are. I'm constantly amazed at the intolerance of people - and of their willingness to twist religious teaching to fit their world view.
