The lovely life of a 4th year medical student

So, 4th year has officially begun. Yesterday, a friend and I made sushi and shabu-shabu for 15 of our friends at my house. I made inside-out california rolls (sprinkled with tobiko), spicy tuna rolls, as well as sake, maguro, hamachi, and unagi sushi and sashimi. We had edemame and wakame. That was the dinner table spread. On the coffee table, around which everyone was sitting on the ground, we had a boiling pot of japanese broth, with fine cuts of raw beef, pork and vegetables to dunk into. The evening ended with the completion of a very large bottle (jug?) of heated sake and a few dozen devoured mochi balls.

I've forgotten just how awesome life can be when you have a little spare time on your hands and friends within reach.

My plans for this week: tomorrow, rock climbing with a friend, followed by the traditional weekly trip to "our" local bar, where my friends and I check in, play pool, and pretend to be normal people for a night. Then "thanksgiving dinner" with some med school friends on Wed, followed by the real thing with my folks and family friends I've known my entire life, then dinner with friends from the Bay Area whose amazing little boy is already walking and talking, then more catching up with family and friends, and more climbing, and --gasp-- the hopeful conclusion of the first fiction book I have read front-to-back in four years!

In the meantime, I am actually "working", on my dermatology rotation. I have some interesting, cliched stories to report already, unfortunately, it's a small world and I'm learning to keep my mouth shut on the world wide web. I am finally learning a bit about rashes, which is nice, and the environment in the clinic is surprisingly supportive and relaxed, which is nothing to complain about. It is not a field of medicine I think I could ever become passionate about, but who knows...I have a month left to go.

As long as I don't think about this wonderful time of 4th year rotations ever ending, everything will be just fine.

Sounds like a wonderful time was had by all. I remember the last time we had Shabu Shabu, it was quite delicious as I recall. Wish I could be there.

I too am looking forward to the "beginning of 4th year". Alas, it won't be till after the new year for me. *eep*
