I've just started my week on newborn nursery. For an entire week, I get to get up at 5 am and spend the entire day performing little baby exams on little newborn babies. If that doesn't make you giddy, you are obviously not a girl with two (hopefully still) healthy ovaries.
Which says some interesting things about me. I had no trouble waking up for trauma surgery and getting in early just for the chance to catch that early morning rollover, drive-by, etc. And now, I doubt I will have ANY trouble rising and shinning before daybreak to go hold these little tiny human beings. I might possibly gravitate towards the extremes...
Just to nauseate some of you less sentimental types, things I really like about newborn nursery after day 1:
- tiny feet with the grip relfex still intact, so that when you press your finger into the ball of their feet, they wrap around you as if you were a tree branch the little monkey was trying to hang from.
- the suckling reflex: stick your finger into the mouth of a crying baby, and they'll suck away so hard, you'll have a hard time pulling it out. now i understand the fear behind breastfeeding.
- little hands, long fingers
- lanugo: the soft downy hair that covers a newborn
ok, before anyone yacks, i'll stop.
