Today was a crappy day in the ER. We spent the day trying to save a young mom with an unlucky medical complication of her recent surgery. After our residents and attending fought all day to keep her alive, she finally became stable enough for the 5 minute transfer to the ICU. Several hours later, we heard the code called, and knew it had to be her. She passed away soon after. Throughout the day, we had large boluses of sick patients, who had to wait for hours to be seen, and then, midday, they brought in the babyboy, 8months old, who had been shot in between the eyes in some sort of home invasion. After nearly an hour of fighting to keep him alive, he didn't make it either.

I'm sorry you had such a terrible day. I have been thinking about that baby almost constantly since I first heard about him on the news, totally horrified. You know, everyone told me that once you have a kid, you'll never be able to see child-patients the same again. I am pretty sure that Pediatrics would be a completely different rotation for me now compared with last winter. Anyhow, as awful as it was, I'm glad that good people like you fought so hard for them.

I heard that exact thing you said from several people - about the difficulty of dealing with sick kids once you are a parent. I agree, I really think it must change your perspective. There were a lot of really angry staff in the ER that night after this baby was brought it. I bet you they were the ones with kids. As for me, I was fortunate enough not to have to directly work on the child, as he was taken to Peds. One of our classmates did, as did another who received him in the PICU, and they are both still a little shaken.
